Welcome to The Townley Blessing Room!
The concept of a Blessing Room was shared with us by our sister church in Linden. In essence, it is an “exchange ministry”. A ministry in which needed items reach the hands of needful people. Townley acts as the conduit. The Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey has awarded us a grant for $4000 to proceed.
Some of you may remember that years ago, Townley had the intention of establishing a clothing closet. Items of clothing would be made available for purchase at a nominal cost. The project ran into several roadblocks and never materialized. However, two closets were built in the old chapel basement and outfitted with shelves for storing items. Water conditions in the basement and high humidity reduced this space to temporary storage, mostly for our annual/semi-annual rummage sales. In short, the chapel basement was an area you wouldn’t want to spend much time in.
Over the last couple of years, significant progress has been made to reclaim the space and make it more functional. The area has undergone substantial decluttering, and these efforts are continuing. The walls and ceilings have been painted. Window cleaning, dust and spider web removal have occurred. Last year, several small projects were completed to mitigate the water issues (somebody knock on wood). Just recently, the floor was treated with an epoxy base paint. The space is looking and smelling 100% better! As you read this, three of our self-help groups utilize this space for their weekly meetings.
We have prepared to make additional use of this area. The purpose of the Townley Blessing Room is to offer, on a monthly basis, clothing and small household item to families and individuals in our surrounding community using this space to stage the items. Who is involved? An Outreach Committee has been established consisting of members from our congregation and community. What is involved? Remnants from our Spring Rummage Sale served as the initial supply of goods to stock the empty shelves. Additional donations are also being solicited. All items are organized in their appropriate areas (Men’s clothing, Women’s clothing, Children's clothing, household items, and etc.).
We believe that our community will benefit from the Townley Blessing Room by meeting the needs of families and individuals in need of clothing and household items. An added benefit is the opportunity for our congregation to further engage with our community and give us more opportunities of working together, furthering the feeling of camaraderie we have shared at so many rummage sales. Keep your eyes open for more information. Keep your hands available for the various tasks ahead. Most of all, keep your hearts open to the movement of the Holy Spirit.
